Getting Started

What is poker in one minute?

Poker is a card game where you try to win chips. You win by showing the best five-card hand, or by making everyone else fold. There are betting rounds where you can check, bet, call, raise, or fold.

Start with What is Poker? and Hand Ranks.

Which game should a beginner learn first?

Texas Hold’em. It is the most popular and has simple structure. Learn the five-card community board and four betting rounds here: Texas Hold’em Rules.

How many players and what deck?

A standard 52-card deck. Tables usually seat 2–9 players.

Rules & Hand Ranks

What is the order of poker hands?

Royal Flush → Straight Flush → Four of a Kind → Full House → Flush → Straight → Three of a Kind → Two Pair → One Pair → High Card.

See pictures and tie-break rules: Full Hand Rankings.

Do suits (♠ ♥ ♦ ♣) have rank?

No. In standard poker, suits do not rank. When two hands tie by rank, use kickers or split the pot if the best five cards are identical.

How do straights and Aces work?

Ace can be high or low, but not both in the same hand. High straight: 10-J-Q-K-A (“Broadway”). Low straight: A-2-3-4-5 (“the wheel”). K-A-2-3-4 is not a straight.

What is a kicker?

A kicker is a side card used to break ties when the main hand part is the same (e.g., both have one pair). Example: A pair of Queens with A-10-7 kickers beats a pair of Queens with A-9-9 because the second kicker (10 vs 9) decides.

Texas Hold’em

How does one hand work in Hold’em?

Blinds (or antes) go in → deal 2 hole cards → bet (preflop) → flop (3 cards) → bet → turn (1 card) → bet → river (1 card) → final bet → showdown if needed. Best five-card hand wins.

Full rules: Texas Hold’em Rules.

What starting hands should I play?

Begin tight-aggressive. Play stronger hands in early seats and add more hands on the cutoff and button. See simple charts: Starting Hands (Hold’em).

Cash game vs tournament — what is the difference?

Cash: chips = real money, you can join/leave anytime, blinds don’t change. Tournament: you pay a buy-in for a fixed stack, blinds rise over time, play until you bust or reach prizes.

Where to Play in Uganda

Where are live games?

Mainly in Kampala (licensed casinos/clubs). Schedules change—always call first. See our live map: Where to Play (Map & Venues).

What should I ask a venue before I go?
  • Game type (Hold’em/Omaha), days and start time
  • Buy-in, blinds/antes, and rules
  • ID requirements (age check 25+)
What is table etiquette?

Act in turn, keep cards/chips on the table, don’t talk about a live hand you’re not in, be polite. Full guide: Table Etiquette.

Online Play

Is online poker allowed in Uganda?

Only with licensed operators who follow local rules (age checks, responsible gaming, etc.). Avoid unlicensed sites. See Uganda & the Law.

How do I check if a site is licensed?
  1. Look for a local licence number in the site footer/legal page.
  2. Confirm with the regulator or operator support.
  3. Age checks (25+) and KYC are a good sign the site follows rules.
Are VPN/offshore sites safe?

Risky. You may lose funds or data, and you may be outside local protections. Use licensed operators only.

Money & Bankroll

How big should my bankroll be?

Simple starters: Cash games ~20–50 buy-ins; Tournaments ~100–200 buy-ins (variance is higher). Use our calculator: Tools & Calculators.

What are pot odds and equity?

Pot odds = the price to continue. Equity = your chance to win at showdown. Compare both to decide call/fold. Learn the “Rule of 2 & 4” here: Odds & Outs.

Do I pay taxes on winnings?

Tax rules can change. Check your operator’s terms and current local guidance. We do not give tax advice; see Uganda & the Law.

Strategy Basics

What does “in position” mean and why is it strong?

You act after your opponent on each street, so you see their action first. More info → better decisions. Learn more: Position in Poker.

What are “outs” and quick odds?

Outs are cards that improve your hand. From the flop, multiply outs by 4 for a quick % to the river; from the turn, multiply by 2. Full guide: Odds & Outs.

Beginner tips that really help?
  • Play fewer starting hands; be patient.
  • Raise with strong hands; don’t just limp.
  • Use normal sizes (about ½–⅔ pot).
  • Fold when unsure; wait for a better spot.
  • Prefer playing in position.

See the full list: Beginner Guide.

Play Safe (25+)

How do I keep poker fun and safe?

Set a money limit and a time limit before you start. Take breaks. Do not play when tired, angry, or upset. Keep poker money separate from daily money.

Full page: Play Safe (25+).

What if I feel out of control?

Take a short break (24–72h), set hard limits, use self-exclusion tools, and talk to someone you trust. Your health comes first.
