Poker is a card game where you try to win chips. You win by showing the best five-card hand, or by making everyone else fold. There are betting rounds where you can check, bet, call, raise, or fold.
Start with What is Poker? and Hand Ranks.
Texas Hold’em. It is the most popular and has simple structure. Learn the five-card community board and four betting rounds here: Texas Hold’em Rules.
A standard 52-card deck. Tables usually seat 2–9 players.
Royal Flush → Straight Flush → Four of a Kind → Full House → Flush → Straight → Three of a Kind → Two Pair → One Pair → High Card.
See pictures and tie-break rules: Full Hand Rankings.
No. In standard poker, suits do not rank. When two hands tie by rank, use kickers or split the pot if the best five cards are identical.
Ace can be high or low, but not both in the same hand. High straight: 10-J-Q-K-A (“Broadway”). Low straight: A-2-3-4-5 (“the wheel”). K-A-2-3-4 is not a straight.
A kicker is a side card used to break ties when the main hand part is the same (e.g., both have one pair). Example: A pair of Queens with A-10-7 kickers beats a pair of Queens with A-9-9 because the second kicker (10 vs 9) decides.
Blinds (or antes) go in → deal 2 hole cards → bet (preflop) → flop (3 cards) → bet → turn (1 card) → bet → river (1 card) → final bet → showdown if needed. Best five-card hand wins.

Begin tight-aggressive. Play stronger hands in early seats and add more hands on the cutoff and button. See simple charts: Starting Hands (Hold’em).
Cash: chips = real money, you can join/leave anytime, blinds don’t change. Tournament: you pay a buy-in for a fixed stack, blinds rise over time, play until you bust or reach prizes.
Mainly in Kampala (licensed casinos/clubs). Schedules change—always call first. See our live map: Where to Play (Map & Venues).
Act in turn, keep cards/chips on the table, don’t talk about a live hand you’re not in, be polite. Full guide: Table Etiquette.
Only with licensed operators who follow local rules (age checks, responsible gaming, etc.). Avoid unlicensed sites. See Uganda & the Law.
Risky. You may lose funds or data, and you may be outside local protections. Use licensed operators only.
Simple starters: Cash games ~20–50 buy-ins; Tournaments ~100–200 buy-ins (variance is higher). Use our calculator: Tools & Calculators.
Pot odds = the price to continue. Equity = your chance to win at showdown. Compare both to decide call/fold. Learn the “Rule of 2 & 4” here: Odds & Outs.
Tax rules can change. Check your operator’s terms and current local guidance. We do not give tax advice; see Uganda & the Law.
You act after your opponent on each street, so you see their action first. More info → better decisions. Learn more: Position in Poker.
Outs are cards that improve your hand. From the flop, multiply outs by 4 for a quick % to the river; from the turn, multiply by 2. Full guide: Odds & Outs.
